Purchased to use with AT&T internet. It was difficult to setup. Took about an hour along with AT&T customer service rep. to get it up and running. Once setup, tt worked fine. Best price I found for this unit.

Recommended. Easy to setup, 3 minutes. NOT HOT, slightly warm to the touch. Works perfectly with Bellsouth DSL. Range is limited to 50 feet or so for a very good signal. Neighbors do not see my network anymore. Gave it one star (trick) so you would read this review first and get a better idea that this device is OK.

Whoever said this is an ADSL modem and not a DSL modem doesn't know what he/she is talking about. I got this modem 8 years ago from PacBell (now AT&T) and uses it on and off with various DSL provider in the PacBell/ATT circuit in San Francisco Bay Area. As of last weekend my parents are still using it with their newly installed DSL Direct (dry loop) line.

One thing it is missing is the PPPoE onboard capability that most newer DSL modem with integrated router (like the newer model that AT&T is giving out). So if you are doing self install, you have to have an external connection or call the customer service phone number to setup your account to get the PPPoE setting to put into your router (or if you only has 1 computer, you have to install a PPPoE client).

Some of these modems (earlier model) are actually rebadged 5660 and you might be able to flash a hacked 5660 firmware on it and make it a router. Was a great feature 8 years ago but nowadays it no longer make sense when you can get a used router for only -30 that performs much better.

This modem works *fine* on DSL lines, there's no problem that a little reading can't solve. It can operate in Bridge Mode, or as a simple router with a firmware upgrade.

I have used a 2wire modem for 4 years and it did a fantastic job, however as I began to increase my wireless devices in my household, it did not have the capabilities to keep up with the work load.

This Netgear modem was well worth the money. It was simple to set up, took less than 10 min including installation.

The reason I chose the dual band modem, is knowing where the wireless technology is going and this modem/router is ahead of the game. I do not have any wireless N devices yet but I know that I will have some in the future.

This has an option to set the 2.4ghz and 5ghz together, or one on and one off, your choice. I am sure that when I do get wireless N devices it will run amazing.

I am now able to stream movies on wifi, and my wife can use the laptop at the same time. This did not work before it would make the video buffer and lag.

I am using 2 computers and a PS3 wired connection, and 2 Laptops and an Ipod on wifi. Many more wifi devices to come and this will do the trick. It can hold up to 23 channels on the 5 ghz stream and 3 channels on the 2.4 ghz stream.

I am a review buyer and the reviews didn't do it justice, I hope this helps you.

i bought this item from amazon a few weeks ago to upgrade my wireless network.
first configuration was very difficult even with professional help, more over dual band didn't work. even netgear support was unable to set it up. after several days of hard work, netgear support gave up and told me to return this item back to amazon and ask for full refund.

I had som problems in the past. My VoIP settings were erased (I do not know why, could be related to power interupts) and caused me a lot of money for long distance calls that I thought I was doing through the VoIP.....Anyways, I learned the hard way, I requested the telephone company to disable the long distance calls feature, I monitor the status of the VoIP light when I make a phone call and for about 3 weeks now it works with no problem. My 1000H Homeportal has been a solid performer and was extremely easy to install. I have been using it for three years and have had no problems. However, I don't recommend this device unless you are looking for the cheapest, most reliable solution to sharing an Internet connection, files and printer between computers. The 2Wire 2700HG-B DSL Modem Router Wireless Access Point currently sells for about the same price and is a much better product.

The 1000HW acts as the network Access Point for up to four PCs, which can then simultaneously share a single internet connection, printers, and files between any of the computers. The Homeportal has only one ethernet and one USB 1.1 connection, meaning that the connection of more than one PC to the unit will require Wireless networking or a seperate device that allows multiple ethernet cable connections. The Homeportal is limited to Wireless 802.11B connections. This means slower connection than 802.11G when networking wirelessly, and definitely not a good thing for those looking to stream music or video files or any video rich Internet content. Given that, I highly recommend getting the 2Wire 2700HG-B DSL Modem Router Wireless Access Point. The 2700HG-B is 802.11G and allows four ethernet connections.

The 1000HW has a built-in firewall that will provide all the security most users need when coupled with Anti-virus software, and requires no configuring by the user. For those who want to create more access to their network, the 2Wire software allows more advanced users that flexibility also. It is capable of WEP and WPA encryption modes.

Pros:

Cons:
- only one Ethernet connection
- USB 1.1 not the faster 2.0
- 802.11b is too slow for those whose primary interest is streaming digital entertainment (music, videos, photos), need 802.11G, and probably 802.11N if wanting to stream Hi-Definition content
- Can probably get a 802.11g product from 2Wire or other manufacturer for about the same price and will need the extra speed to meet the future demands of Media rich content used at home or in the office.

The title tells all; I got the router in the mail, hooked it up, and it failed to work. I've since hooked my old wireless router back up and am back online, writing this review. I hate it when I get ripped off!

This is an XP device... Don't use this with Vista! - Tag - Kentucky
I wanted a used DSL modem to avoid signing a contract with AT&T. I foolishly purchased a used 2Wire 1000HW on Amazon without first checking to see if it was compatible with my crappy Vista 64-bit operating system. The seller didn't mention that the driver disc wasn't included, which is normally not a problem, because downloading drivers is easy from most manufacturer's website... emphasis on "most". 2Wire is an unfortunate exception. 2wire(.)com is a very limited website with marginal technical assistance, which is why they get 2 stars. In the FAQ section, they state:

"2Wire Inc., AS A COMPANY, fully supports Windows Vista. 2Wire will work quickly to resolve any compatibility issues as they are reported, both through internal testing and via customer feedback. Unless specified otherwise, "Windows Vista" in this FAQ refers to all editions of the operating system."

Unfortunately, that simple statement is as far as their "support" goes. There are NO Vista drivers, NO patches, or anything else for that matter. They say they support it, but there is nothing to back up the statement. This is shameful. I'm used to uninstalling new software because it won't work with Vista 64-bit, but at least those websites don't make misleading claims.

I finally rigged up my system to make it connect, but I suspect that the wireless part of the router won't work, and I'm not even going to try.

If you are using XP or earlier, and you are skilled enough to install networks without technical support, then this is good product. I certainly wouldn't pay more than , though.
