Diamond SupraMax Single Port Ethernet/USB Bridge/Router DSL Modem

Great Deal Diamond SupraMax Single Port Ethernet/USB Bridge/Router DSL Modem

I replaced a PC running sharing software (on an 8-computer home network) with this box. It couldn't have been easier. Everything performed as stated. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5 was that I couldn't figure out how to set it up for static IP. The instructions seemed to indicate that this was possible but everything that I tried didn't work. Once I converted everything over to DHCP it worked great. Highly recommend this product.

If it only worked ! - pcman -
Couldn't get an IP address from the device. I would have tried another, but Tiger Direct told me they would only credit and that I would have to order another. I am sure I just got a defective device. Bought an Actiontec GR701D instead....wonderful device !

NETGEAR DM111P ADSL2+ Ethernet Modem - DSL modem - external - Fast Ethernet - 24 Mbps

Great Deal NETGEAR DM111P ADSL2+ Ethernet Modem - DSL modem - external - Fast Ethernet - 24 Mbps

I am use to setting up wireless internet connections and various other things so I had no problems. Its smaller than my Netgear wireless router and portable.

Defective item - dizzy7 - Iowa
After spending a total of over 5 hours over a 3 day period on the phone with various Netgear tech support people trying to get this modem to connect my computer to the net, they finally gave up and suggested that I return it since it was obviously defective (which is what I did and hopefully [...] will soon issue me a credit.) I was also told by one of the Netgear support reps I spoke to that they had been having this problem with "quite a few" of these models, so keep your fingers crossed if you buy one. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is that it is inexpensive and nice looking and if you're lucky enough to get one that works, I imagine you will be quite pleased with it.

X5 DSL2/2+ Modem/router/gatewa

Great Deal X5 DSL2/2+ Modem/router/gatewa

Zoom may not be well known, but this modem has worked flawlessly for me for several years. Worked so well I got my parents one of these after their DSL modem took a dump. Much better than the crap modem that ATT sent me that was "supposed" to be really good (and which gets good reviews).

It does run hot, but so does EVERY other modem I've owned. The 2Wire modems ATT sent me ran even hotter.

I like the included 4 port router on this unit - allows me to use my home network (wired) for all my computers.

One thing that does seem to give this unit fits is if you run apps like Bittorrent that allow hundreds of simultaneous connections. Bittorrent will run fine but other web activities slow to a crawl. To avoid that, if I'm interested in downloading, I'll run Bittorrent at night and then disconnect when I want to gain unfettered access to the web. I have never used Bittorrent with other modems, so don't know if this affects others the same way.

For price vs performance, I give this 5 out of 5.

Didn't work - M. Taylor - Madison, CT
CD Installation wizard configured the modem and allowed it to connect to my DSL provider with DHCP settings. When I tried to use the web console interface to set up my static IP it did not work. Manufacturer documentation is skimpy, and nothing online was any different (more helpful) than what was provided in the PDF manual included on the CD. Zoom only provides e-mail based support and live chat during regular business hours - so forget any late afternoon or evening assistance.

There are several other ways to get into the modem (not provided in the user documentation) - including the telnet port - which I was able to instantly gain access to the modem with - however the modem did not want to respond to any of the configuration changes made this way.

Long story short - I tried using several computers to uninstall then re-install the software, and after 4 attempts I was able to get into the web interface - however it would take 2 to 5 minutes for the modem to serve the log-in authorization window. Once into the web interface it served up the different pages very quickly, however, like the telnet attempts, the changes would not take after saving and rebooting (you'd be right back to the original configuration).

Anyway - returning defective product. Thanks to Amazon for good customer service!

Qwest Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem

Great Deal Qwest Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem

I was able to pick up my Actiontec M1000 for (along with a bunch of line conditioners) and it works great!

Now I will say that I don't have Qwest as my ISP, I have Earthlink. All I had to do is change the VPI/VCI to 0/35 and it works like a charm!
For those who are wanting to use this modem with another ISP, here are the VPI/VCI numbers that you will have to change to get the modem to authenticate.
Qwest 0/32, Verizon 0/35, SBC 0/35, AT&T 0/35, SW Bell 0/35, Sprint 8/35, TDS 0/35, Bell South 8/35, CenturyTel 8/35, EarthLink 0/35, Embarq 8/35, and GSInet 8/35

Other then that, it's a great modem. The Quest firmware is easy to setup and configure. But do some shopping around, you can get this modem for MUCH less.

Pros:
Lots of features.
Works!
Works super well with my Linksys WRT160N, much better then my super old Netopia modem.

Cons:
None.

Good modem with right setting used - earthnfire78 -
1) Setting up DSL service using the quick connect disc (not a very quick connect). Wish that DSL setup was quick, as I'm the type of person that need the internet like NOW! Something like that way that it is done through most cable internet providers, which involves the Mac Address of the modem. Copying down user ID info, wish I had done that the first time more details about later.

2) Surfing the Web everything seems to be working fine. Dropped the internet after about 12 hours use, did not think much of it. After rebooting modem everything seems to work fine, so it seemed that is all it needed. After a mouth it is dropping the Internet every 1-12 hours and rebooting its self (something tells me it was always doing this). Called Qwest's Tech Support turns out that a setting in the modem need to be changed. This could be the reason the first one I had was losing the internet. With the setting changed to what Qwest uses, no more dropping of the Web.

3) Qwest uses tips:
a) First login to the modems setup page by typing in the modems IP address (tip IP address should be 192.168.0.1).
b) Left click on Quick Setup tab
c) Left click on Advance IP Configuration
d) Select PPPoA
e) Left click Apply

4) Pros:
a) Setup was pretty easy.
b) Modem setup Interface is very simple to understand.
c) ADSL 2/2+ Modem so works with major DSL providers.
d) Small footprint when standing up.

5) Cons:
a) PPPoA not default even though banded for Qwest.
b) Some settings not auto set by carrier.
c) Cannot disable NAT Firewall without losing internet (reason for the 3 star rating).
d) Had to call Qwest Tech Support.

6) Overall this is a good modem and with the right setting you will not have dropping of the internet on the modems side. Only wish that the NAT Firewall could be disabled without losing the internet.

best for Qwest - B. Bates - Santa Fe, NM USA
Best modem for Qwest DSL. Small, and light weight. Easy to install and works fast.

ADSL Line Filter & Phone/Modem Splitter Features

  • Noise filter separates phone signals (POTS) from modem signals (ADSL)
  • Preserves quality modem connections and phone/fax signals - reduces interference
  • Installs in seconds
  • The splitter physically connects both your telephone & modem cables to one phone line
  • 3 RJ11 Jacks: 1 to the line (wall jack), 1 to the modem, and 1 to the telephone/fax

ADSL Line Filter & Phone/Modem Splitter Overviews

When using a DSL connection with a telephone or fax machine, it's necessary to put a filter on every phone line in the house or office, to separate the signals for the modem (higher-frequency ADSL) from the signals for the phone & fax (lower-frequency POTS).
This filter/splitter has three RJ11 jacks to do just that. Connect the 'line' jack to your wall outlet cable, and connect the 'phone' and 'modem' jacks to your phone or fax line, and to the modem. Each jack is conveniently labeled.
Signal quality is preserved and your connections stay clear of static and noise from interference.
Please note: you will need to install a filter on each phone in the house to prevent line noise.

Efficient Networks 12A-5100-001 SpeedStream 5100 DSL Modem

Great Deal Efficient Networks 12A-5100-001 SpeedStream 5100 DSL Modem

This is the DSL ethernet modem that currently is shipped to those who buy SBC/Yahoo DSL services. If you need a modem in a second room, and you don't want to lug the modem and its wires around, then you may want to consider buying a second modem.

The best thing about it (and most important for a non-techie user like myself) is that it comes (ALMOST) complete and is generally easy to install. An included CD shows installation steps; however, there is an overemphasis on desktop vs. laptop computers. Basically you plug in the modem, and attach one of the included wires into an included DSL filter. THis "filter" goes straight to your telephone jack. It's like a "splitter," in that the filter has one socket for the line to the modem and one to your telephone. Now, you can talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time.

Here's why the setup is not totally complete. If your laptop computer did not come with one, you will need a device such as the "Linksys PCM200 EtherFast 10/100 32-Bit Integrated CardBus PC Card" (please see my review of this on Amazon.com; the Linksys can get a little tricky). Similar devices are available for desktop computers. This device easily plugs into a "port" on the side of a laptop, or is placed in an open port of a desktop. A different, yellow wire (included with the Speedstream) connects the plugged-in Linksys (or similar product) to the Speedstream modem.

THe Speedstream box comes with the modem, a power adapter, several DSL filters to connect to your phone outlets, cables (RJ-45, RJ-11), a written guide and and a CD containing self-install software. It works in Windows or Mac environments, and desktops, laptops, or workstations--as long as they have "a standard 10Base-T Ethernet port." For either WIndows or MAC, you'll need 64 MB of RAM, at least 100MB free disk space left, and a CD-ROM or DVD drive. The listed "minimum system requirements" also include a 256-color adaptor with 800 x 600 resolution for those with Windows (i.e., a PC instead of a Mac).

Again, please look at the reviews for the ethernet device sold by Linksys and perhaps a few other companies. That was the weak link (no pun intended) in the installation. Everything else was fairly easy. I've had the Speedstream 5100 for about a week now and have had very few problems. You do need to make sure that the cable connections are secure before attempting to get on the internet.

Yikes... - iOdin3 -
When I first subscribed to SBC/Yahoo DSL, this was the modem that shipped with it. I was connected at 100 Mbps, but was only surfacing a download speed that maxed out at just above 20 KB/s. I checked my computer for anything that would slow it down, but nothing. I called AT&T and they said the ping was fine and modems don't affect speed. I recently changed over to the Motorola SB5120 Surfboard Modem, and my download speed spiked to about 300 KB/s. Same thing with my friend except even lower speeds.

Pretty Good Modem - Kamalpreet Singh -
This is the onle modem I have owned and had for 2 years now. Don't know much about modems or if there are better. I am statisfied with this. I had few problems though, but it was not entirely the Modems fault. I had tried to hook a wireless phone line in my house. While the wireless phone line was hooked my dsl would not work. Since the Wireless phonline was a cheap one, they cost near a hundred or more, it is likely to be the problem. I did not use it. Another problem I had was with my Lynskys wireless router. It needed to be installed and the DSL will not work if it is and I had lost the installation CD of the router so hooking up my new computer, I had to call SBC to help, and they did. They had helped me hook up the Lynksys and I did not have buy another wireless rouer or Order the CD, which Im sure they will charge me.

Cisco-Linksys BEFCMU10 Ethernet Cable Modem

Great Deal Cisco-Linksys BEFCMU10 Ethernet Cable Modem

I purchased this Linksys cable modem as one of Amazon's amazing deals of the day and I'm extremely pleased with it. I'm not a tech expert in this area, but I know the Linksys name is gernerally regarded as dependable and so far this cable modem hasn't let me down. I've been using it for about six months now and not a single problem. No set-up issues found here...very easy to integrate into your computer system. The only thing it can't do is call the cable company for you...you still need do notify them of your MAC address.

If you're currently renting a modem from your cable company, then look around for one that is on sale and drop the monthly fee; though small, it adds up. This Linksys modem is a good place to start.

Love the product and the Seller! - Lynn -

Macsense MIH-130 Xrouter Pro 10/100 Router for Cable DSL Modems

Great Deal Macsense MIH-130 Xrouter Pro 10/100 Router for Cable DSL Modems

I've been using the Xrouter Pro for almost a year now and it totally rocks - I've had zero problems!! This is the router that I recommend to all of my friends - even my mother.

Setup is very easy and straight forward; it only took me about 10 minutes to get it up and running. The built-in PPPoE support works flawlessly (I'm on BellSouth.net).

The unit passes VPN traffic with no problem. I've even got an 802.11b access point plugged into the Xrouter Pro and can establish a VPN connection between my wireless laptop and my corporate intranet.

For more advanced users who want to do more than just surf the Internet there are plenty of features: DMZ support, access control list support, built-in DHCP client and server, supports static routes and RIP, ability to block port scanning, ability to disable ping response, etc.

While the name (Macsense) may sound like this product is designed for use with Macintosh systems, make no mistake this unit works with any platform. In fact I don't even own a Mac - all of the computers that I have plugged into the Xrouter Pro are PC compatibles.

Terrific router - Ace909 - Highland Park, IL USA
I wasn't sure what to expect. I had never set up a network before. We just built a house, put in CAT5e throughout and wanted internet up and running using just one cable modem. This thing is a dream, hooked up the cables, configured one computer, which took about 3 minutes, and all the other computers were recognized and online as soon as I turned them on. It couldn't have worked any better. Absolutely terrific product and piece of idiot proof technology.

Good Unit - But CHECK THE FIRMWARE - David Nathanson - Southern Calif, United States
I've installed several of these XRouters, and everything is great wth one Glaring Exception. They are still shipping units that need a firmware update, and the last firmware update is from mid 2001. A year and a half isn't enough time to get the new firmware into the unit? Terrible waste of troubleshooting time. So, just be sure to check what firmware # is in there, against their website, before wasting any time configuring it. Once that's done, it's a rock-solid little unit, and works great with PPPoE, DSL, Cable, your server, PC, Mac, whatever. They just need to get the newer firmware into the unit.

Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG901 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem

Great Deal Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG901 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem

I bought this modem to replace an old Linksys Wireless-G that my cable company dropped support for.

There are other reviews that describe why this is a good modem. I agree.

What I found is that the setup software is poor. The automated process wants to connect to the internet to proceed. Well, fine, but in my situation I needed to have the settings configured in order to register my modem with the cable company. No big deal to configure manually, except the CD forces you to install some useless software to access a .pdf user's manual -- very stupid Motorola, the .pdf manual should be in the root file of the CD. It took longer to get to the manual than it did to configure the modem.

Once I got to the user's manual, configuring the modem was very fast and easy. Wi-fi setup was also very easy. The configuration settings are laid out in a straightforward fashion, so once you are in the setup you almost do not need the manual anymore.

A very good modem for the money. I give the product a high rating because the issue with the manual is a one-time irritation and does not impact the quality of the product.

Don't forget to change your admin password and the wi-fi SSID.

17 computers connected effortlessly - -
This works like a charm. I picked up these from Best Buy for 9 and tested them out. After that I bought it off Amazon for half the price (returned those of course). I have 13 servers that are connected to this modem through a switch and about 4 computers connected wireless. Its good stuff.
