Great Deal X5 DSL2/2+ Modem/router/gatewa
Zoom may not be well known, but this modem has worked flawlessly for me for several years. Worked so well I got my parents one of these after their DSL modem took a dump. Much better than the crap modem that ATT sent me that was "supposed" to be really good (and which gets good reviews).
It does run hot, but so does EVERY other modem I've owned. The 2Wire modems ATT sent me ran even hotter.
I like the included 4 port router on this unit - allows me to use my home network (wired) for all my computers.
One thing that does seem to give this unit fits is if you run apps like Bittorrent that allow hundreds of simultaneous connections. Bittorrent will run fine but other web activities slow to a crawl. To avoid that, if I'm interested in downloading, I'll run Bittorrent at night and then disconnect when I want to gain unfettered access to the web. I have never used Bittorrent with other modems, so don't know if this affects others the same way.
For price vs performance, I give this 5 out of 5.

CD Installation wizard configured the modem and allowed it to connect to my DSL provider with DHCP settings. When I tried to use the web console interface to set up my static IP it did not work. Manufacturer documentation is skimpy, and nothing online was any different (more helpful) than what was provided in the PDF manual included on the CD. Zoom only provides e-mail based support and live chat during regular business hours - so forget any late afternoon or evening assistance.
There are several other ways to get into the modem (not provided in the user documentation) - including the telnet port - which I was able to instantly gain access to the modem with - however the modem did not want to respond to any of the configuration changes made this way.
Long story short - I tried using several computers to uninstall then re-install the software, and after 4 attempts I was able to get into the web interface - however it would take 2 to 5 minutes for the modem to serve the log-in authorization window. Once into the web interface it served up the different pages very quickly, however, like the telnet attempts, the changes would not take after saving and rebooting (you'd be right back to the original configuration).
Anyway - returning defective product. Thanks to Amazon for good customer service!
